As far as photography goes, this Saturday was one hell-of-a-lot lucky. Within 2 hours I was exposed to some pretty awesome subject matters to click. This is one totally unexpected photos ... i was standing on the busy Michigan Avenue in downtown Chicago, I turn back to see this sparrow chick. Then one parent sparrow suddenly came up from the bushes. I really love the second photo, but a grass blade on the face of the chick spoils the photo a bit.

The painter had such a singleminded-focus on his work that the sweltering heat, the hustle-bustle of the crowd and me taking his photographs ... nothing disturbed him at all ... Though the photographs have not come out very well, but I found the artist very interesting ... He's painting his sculpture named the "Cloud Gate" and fondly called "The Bean" by Chicagoans ...

Is there a connection? The eyes speak of a person who has observed the harsh world very closely and has a lot to say, but ironically & sadly the lips are so tightly sealed that not a word would come out. The choice of lock-earrings seems to be a reflection of her subconscious mind which has locked-in a whole lot of emotions ...

After taking the water-lily photos, as I was returning ... I saw this bird and found its colors a bit unusual. I took out my camera to take its photo and then the most amazing thing happened. Out of nowhere one parent Robin came with food [probably ant] in it's mouth. I saw it feeding the chick and in a flash it flew away. All this happened in just a few seconds ... had I not been looking at the bird through my camera, I would have missed capuring everything.

I was boiling water to make tea ... My kitchen opens to a backyard openspace ... and from below the hedges I saw this beautiful pair of golden eyes staring at me. Well my camera is everready ... I pulled it out ... the blonde feline was still there ...



However, just after our brief *eye-lock*, she abruptly and most selfishly decided to walk-away from the most natural photo-shoot ... leaving me in the lurch. naaah I had my tea ready. End of story. Only in this true metaphorical fable ... I was the hapless-Tom-cat and the she the clever-Jerry ... and there is *NO* moral-of-the-story ... unless the reader decides to interpret one ...

Yet another heron

Today I saw another heron ... This time a Giant Blue Heron!!!
Anyone who has been regularly visiting my Blog is aware how wowed I am by it. Among the small little birds that I see … this S-shaped long neck and longer legs beauty … stands out … elegantly meditating on it's one-foot! Herons are solitary hunters … so I’ve come across three different herons in three different habitats [ponds/ lake].

[#1]The first I saw was this brown heron in a marshy area ...





It completely blended in the background of dried pampas grass. In fact I had to observe for sometime to ascertain that it’s not a piece of wooden long. Since it stands still for a very long time, I took me quite some time to figure out that it’s afterall a huge birdie. Strangely it stood on both the feet, which is very unlikely for herons ...



[#2] The second heron I saw was this Snowy White one ... in a very beautiful setting ... and
[#3] The third one I saw today ... a giant blue heron ...

I decided to paint my photo journal in bright yellow today … with some snaps of morning golden sunshine dancing on the orange-yellow daylilies … in my garden!

Daylilies belong to the Hemerocallis genus …
This Greek word is made up of two parts:
hemera meaning day and kallos meaning beauty.
Quite an appropriate name as each flower lasts for only one day [sad!]
However, the plant produces flowers in abundance that keep blooming over a long period of time …

This friendly beast jumped at me … He probably wanted to greet me at the face level. This chance “hello“ led me to its owner … an old hard working lady who was laboring at a stall in a temporary amusement park that has opened in my neighborhood; as part of the summer bonanza.



In a small chit-chat I had with her, I learnt that she has two dogs but doesn’t have a single photo of them … Well I’ve promised her I’ll give her a few.

The inquisitive entertainer ...
This was one of the most curious squirrels I’ve come across. Mostly chipmunks squiggle away when they see people; this one had quite an inquisitive disposition. Its interest was piqued by the odd looking black box in my hands and to my extreme pleasure it was staring right at the lenses. Naturally scared it was climbing up the branches but repeatedly kept turning its face towards the camera to find out what the heck was this obscure object.

A Three-Act Real-Life Drama:
Act I: I saw a beautiful white Heron with long snowy plumes on the back, standing alone on the lake shore, minding its own business. It had a peaceful sage-like demeanor and it stood still, effortlessly balancing its curvacious body on one-foot. It was obviously oblivious of its charm but I wasn’t …





Act II: I stealthily approached for a closer view … but it was not a dumb couch potato. Its beauty was matched by its sharp agility and within seconds it spread it's exquisitely glamorous wings and took the flight of freedom ...



Act III: It gracefully landed on the lush greenery & serene security of the other side; as I stood there coming in terms with this real-life drama coming to its logical end!
End of story!
Lesson: Like a true nature's child, some creatures are born, born to be wild!!!

* LOL!!! I laughed writing that!
*** This was *NOT* the same old Heron ... on the same old same old marshy land! This one was a new one ... and the location was also different.

This photo will go down as one of my top favourites! In fact, I had not noticed it when I had clicked it. Yesterday I was fiddling with some old photos and I had a "second look".

Note carefully, although these people are sitting in a group; BUT each one is totally lost in his/her own private thoughts. Though physically close; they seem to be as far removed from each-other as can be![Click on the photo for a larger image.] This picture has such an uncanny resemblance with one of the most popular paintings in the Art Institute ....
"Nighthwaks" by Edward Hopper - 1942 [below]

"The painting reveals three customers lost in their own private thoughts. The anonymous and uncommunicative night owls seem as remote from the viewer as they are from one another."

Although Hopper denied that he purposely infused any of his paintings with symbols of isolation and emptiness, he acknowledged of Nighthawks that, "unconsciously, probably, I was painting the loneliness of a large city". Edward Hopper was a member of the Ashcan School of painters who focused on the gritty realities of the city.

has very interesting elevators in the parking lot. It has symbol of different sports team for different levels: 1. Cubs, 2. Bears, 3. White Sox, 4. Black Hawks, 5. Bulls, and 6. Wolves.

For those who are not aware ...
* These symbols stand for the sports teams of Chicago ... baseball, fotball, baseball, hockey, basketball & hockey respectively! Sports is one one of Chicagoans' favourite passtime.

This glass of Zinfandel was lying on my dining table and I could see the reflections of the chair behind it. I thought about experimenting with still-life , which I seldom do. So this is a try AND along comes post-prossesing.

*** Personally, I dont like too much post-processing applied to photos in natural settings ... it takes away the *natural* feel.
But with still-life, post-prosessing is alright I think.
